SOUTH SUDAN: IMPROVING SCHOOL INFRASTRUCTURE AND EDUCATION QUALITY

South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in July 2011, making it the world's youngest state. Prior to independence, the country was ravaged by a civil war that killed 2 million people and drove 4 million people from the country. Entire regions of the country were devastated and the rudimentary infrastructure that existed before the war was completely razed. This also applies to schools. With an illiteracy rate of 75% (85% in the countryside), education is of enormous importance for the development of the country. Unfortunately, the security situation remains tense. Discussions about the border with Sudan and the allocation of profits from oil sales are reviving old conflicts.

The project in brief:

The objective of this project is to ensure quality education for children and youth in Southern Sudan and thus enable them to develop their potential and become autonomous and responsible citizens (which is important in the current context of Southern Sudan). The aim is to provide an environment conducive to learning activities through the renovation and expansion of school infrastructure.

The project includes the following activities:

  • Renovation of classrooms in 2 of the project schools
  • Construction of toilets and new classrooms
  • Equipping new classrooms in the newly built school
  • In-service training for teachers
  • Access to drinking water and sanitary facilities (construction of latrines) in 8 different schools and sensitization of students to good hygiene habits to reduce absenteeism due to water-related diseases
  • The provision of school materials (chalk, books, notebooks) and school uniforms for students in 8 schools located in Twic County
  • Establishment of school clubs where students and teachers can express themselves freely to overcome war trauma and organization of peace education workshops

Project budget:

Total project cost (2021-2024): €199 260

80% of this amount will be provided by the Luxembourg Foreign Ministry. The rest (€39 852) will be covered by CSI together with the partner organisation.

Newsletter
